Winter Sports Insurance: Protect Yourself From Mishaps on the Slope

While winter is most often recognized as a time for holiday celebrations, it is also an excellent time for seasonal sports. Whether you enjoy skiing, snowboarding, hockey, ice fishing or snowmobiling, these sports and trips to mountain resorts are a common tradition in the SoCal area. As these activities continue to rise in popularity, participants should consider winter sports insurance to make sure the day is smooth… skiing.

What is Winter Sports Insurance and Why Do I Need It?

Winter sports insurance is a short-term add-on policy that gives you and your fellow visitors extra coverage to specifically address common issues that may arise when participating in winter athletics. Winter sports are often considered to be high-risk sports by insurers, which means injuries sustained while participating in them may not be covered under normal treatment coverage. Adding winter sports insurance compensates for this and can alleviate the cost of treatment should an accident occur. Many plans also offer additional benefits, such as covering the cost of lost or damaged equipment or lift passes, cancelled activities, and any liability you may have if you injure anyone else. You can add these insurance plans for just the amount of time you are participating, making them very affordable.

Whether traveling near or far to partake in the fun of a snow-filled day, consider speaking with one of our friendly agents about adding winter sports insurance. We’re here to make sure that no matter what happens on the slopes, you’ll be covered; that’s the Conrey Difference. To get in touch and see if winter sports insurance is right for you…

Make an Impact With Your Donations This Thanksgiving

On Thanksgiving, it is important to remember that there are many people who could use something to be thankful for. Around 4,700 people are homeless in Orange County and a whopping 11% of the population lives below the poverty line; that’s almost 350,000 people. As a result, canned food drives, donations, and volunteer work can really benefit those who have fallen on hard times. You can help make their season bright for just a few dollars and a stop by your local donation center. Here are a few centers that serve the Orange County area, as well as some tips so that your donations can go farther to help those in need.

Where to Serve: Donation Centers in OC

There are several donation centers and charitable organizations that serve Orange County.

South County Outreach is one of our favorite programs here at Conrey Insurance Brokers. This organization sponsors independence and helps those in need through food distribution, clothing vouchers, affordable childcare, and job skills training. In addition to being able to choose where monetary donations go, they offer many easy ways to donate, including by mail, in person, or online. For more information on the organization, their most needed items, or how to make monetary donations, click here.

Another outreach program that plays a role in helping local families is the Orange County Rescue Mission. In addition to offering transitional housing, meals, job training programs, and other resources, the rescue mission serves over 300,000 meals to needy families during the holiday season. A donation of just $1.50 helps them to provide a real Thanksgiving dinner to families in need and their Turkey Trot is a fun way for runners of all skill levels to help give back and raise awareness. For more information, visit them on their website.

Tips for Donating: How to Do the Most

  • Canned and non-perishable donations are amazing gifts that can be used by families year-round, however, they are often high in sodium. If you are purchasing canned food at the store, consider looking for low sodium options or donating often forgotten items such as peanut butter.
  • If you are cleaning out your pantry for donations, be sure to check the expiration dates on the cans.
  • Consider making a monetary donation. Often times, rescue organizations have partnerships with local grocers and growers and can often procure a large amount of fresh, healthy food for a small amount of money. For this reason, the organization itself can often make better use of money that would otherwise go to canned foods.

Here at Conrey Insurance Brokers, we want to encourage you to support those who need a bit of extra help. The holidays are a great time to reflect on what we’re thankful for and how we can help those who may struggle with the things we often take for granted. Families of all circumstances, types, and sizes matter. We believe that whether a business or an individual, making a difference in our local community is one of the most important things we all can do; that’s The Conrey Difference.

Why Leaves Change Color in Fall and Where You Can Go in Southern California To View Them

Many people are under the mistaken impression that they need to travel in order to find the beautiful colors of fall. Here in Southern California, we tend to associate fall with pumpkins, chilly weather, and shorter days but not with “leaf peeping”. The reality is that there are plenty of places to visit locally where you can experience the changing colors of fall. Read on to learn what causes these vibrant colors, and find out where you can go to view this colorful phenomenon in Southern California.

Red, Yellow, and Orange: How Do Leaves Get Their Colors?

Shortened days and colder weather signals to trees that winter is approaching. With less sunlight to photosynthesize, the chlorophyll, which normally give the leaves their green shade and which turn light to food, begin to degrade. As the chlorophyll degrades, the leaves lose their green color. At this time, trees produce anthocyanin, a reddish pigment whose purpose is to act as a sunscreen, protecting leaves as they transfer nutrients from the leaves to the base of the tree. This process prepares the trees to survive the harsh winters. Some scientists speculate that strong red colors signal a tree’s strength, which may deter insects who seek to use the trees’ nutrients to help their offspring survive the winter. If you want to learn more about plants and the science behind them, visit Farmer’s Almanac to learn more!

Fall Colors: How to Find Them in Southern California

In SoCal, locations, where fall colors are on full display, are often scarce. Our warm weather and drought-resistant plants make it difficult to find trees that display beautiful, natural fall colors. Luckily, there are some places where these colors thrive, and they often offer other fall surprises as well! Camping fanatics might enjoy a weekend up at Big Bear, where the fall colors come into full bloom along hiking trails. If you also enjoy fall flavors, particularly apples, then you may consider a trip to Oak Glen. There, you can sample freshly picked apples and hot cider donuts while viewing the beautiful colors. The Grass Lake Valley Reservoir, known for its scenery, may be a particularly scenic spot to view these colors- so bring a camera!

Here at Conrey Insurance Brokers, we want to encourage you to pursue the wonders that make fall so great. No matter where your journeys take you, be sure to appreciate the natural beauty that the season brings.

Tap into the Rich History of Oktoberfest

In the United States, almost 20% of people claim German ancestry. In California alone, the number of residents with German heritage totals 3 million people. Nearly everyone knows Oktoberfest as an event featuring beer, brats, and dancing galore, but very few people know the long history behind it. Here are a few fascinating historical points to share with your friends during the festivities!

Origins

Oktoberfest began in 1810 in Munich (where the main event is still held today) as a continuation of a party surrounding a royal wedding. The celebration was so much fun, the country decided to make it a yearly occasion. After 1819, the celebration was moved forward a few weeks to take advantage of warmer weather and longer days. Originally, beer was not a keystone of the festivities; an agricultural show and horse races were the biggest draws. Once allowed, beer stands began to crop up, which were replaced by beer halls in 1896 due to their popularity. While beer and food remained popular attractions, the last horse race was held in 1960 and the agricultural show is now held only every four years.

Cancelations

There have been 24 occasions during which Oktoberfest was canceled, often due to an outbreak of disease or war. A few of the most notable cancellations were due to being at war with Napoleon, an outbreak of cholera, and both World Wars. The festival also underwent a short-lived name change from 1946-1948 where it was dubbed “Autumn Festival”.

Drinks and Dance

According to VistaWide, Oktoberfest is the world’s largest beer festival with 6 million people consuming 1.5 million gallons of beer during the 16-day festival. The beer served during festivities is a unique brew called Märzen, which contains around 6% alcohol. It is stronger and darker than most beer. The food is hearty, including a variety of potato dishes, soft pretzels, sausage, and other meats. The Munich festival includes a variety of fair rides and games to accompany the music, food, and beer.

Here at Conrey Insurance Brokers, we want to wish you a very festive Octoberfest, no matter how you celebrate. O’zapft is! (“It’s tapped!”) And because we always stress proper protection and risk management, please remember to drink responsibly.
